With AllightSykes preparing to celebrate its 30th year as a major contributor to Australian business, it’s only fitting that Peter Breen is also reaching a significant milestone – 25 successful years with the company. Peter is a fundamental cog in the AllightSykes business machine and his stellar career – packed with outstanding achievements – is an inspiring narrative that runs parallel with the company’s growth story. In fact, Peter is a founding father of the lighting division.
With a steady hand and a clear commercial focus, Peter has handled the role of Executive General Manager Sales (Africa) since 2009. He takes pride in his approachable style.
When asked about his approach to business, Peter replied “My ethos is to always work with a clear understanding of the outcome. It’s very important that everyone is on the same page from day one in terms of client expectations. Even more, I work hard to ensure I’m always contactable – to both staff and clients – no matter when”.
Peter then made a comment that offers a compelling insight into his continuing success at such a senior level of business. He explained he always works “with integrity and complete transparency and that has helped me to build a powerful network of contacts based on trust and respect”.
It’s an old-school, perennial recipe for success that’s still fresh and vital today – treat your customers and your staff with respect. By listening to what people say – and by being absolutely clear on what they want – Peter helps his clients to get the products and service they need.
One of the founding fathers of Allight.
In 1993, a group of friends – including Peter – got together and started Allight. Their mission was to sell and supply the best industrial lighting solutions on the market. With Peter’s business acumen and customer service skills, the company grew exponentially and quickly became an established market presence .
With the title NSW State Manager, he was the spearhead for Allight’s move into NSW until 2002. Now including a Sales and a Rental division and a multitude of product, the company continued on its rapid expansion. The key product lines included FG Wilson generator sets, mobile lighting products (manufactured in-house), plus Perkins engines and Godwin Pumps.
It was an extremely busy time as Peter led the team in NSW. He remembers being “flat out building a retail sales team from scratch, creating the rental division, developing marketing strategies and finding a home base branch facility in Sydney”.
“In addition, I was project managing the purchase of the land and building for our first sales/service facility in Singleton NSW, which is the gate way to the Hunter Coal Basin. It was the right place at the right time as the coal industry there was really gearing up” he explained.
From 2002 until 2008, with Peter instrumental to their ongoing growth, he became International Sales Manager for the manufactured products division.
“Travel and sales across the globe followed, but I was still based in Sydney, Australia. During this time I was part of a management group that set up the dealer network across the Americas, North Africa and South East Asia”.
Allight was now a clear market leader in Australia, with international expansion in full swing, so the massive momentum helped them to make the big decision to join forces with another major player in the industrial products space – Sykes Pumps.
Peter explained “with the acquisition of Sykes Pumps global operations in 2010 – by our parent company National Hire Group – my position moved to Executive General Manager Sales Africa for the new and improved brand called AllightSykes.
“That’s where I am now – based in Johannesburg SA with my wife and son, overseeing supply via a dealer conduit across the entire continent of Africa” he said proudly.
From a group of friends with a dream for success, to becoming a worldwide business located across nearly every continent, it’s been an amazing journey with many milestones and accomplishments. When pressed for his most memorable career highlights, Peter replied “there have been many highlights, not the least being the creation of the international success story that is AllightSykes”.
“Although running the Sydney Allight base during the 2000 Olympics does come to mind…..all of our equipment was rented out during the event for a 30 day premium and I believe we reached our 6 month budget in just that one month” he laughed.
“ I also fondly remember a Night surfing event at Bondi Beach – under Allight lights. It was a fantastic scene in one of the world’s most iconic locations. I was proud to be involved and see our brand powering so much fun and excitement.”
Peter is not a man to dwell on the past for long. “There’s an exciting a future for this company with many highlights to come” he said. “AllightSykes continues to grow and establish itself in new markets across the world”.
